Before the Eclipse, Alcova Miami
月食前夕
An immersive solo exhibition introducing two new celestial-inspired light fixtures (ceiling light and wall sconces) along with her architectural furnishings, table lamps, and ceramic tableware sets. Designed to emulate the dark vastness of space, Xiong’s exhibition explores the natural curiosity and unexplainable calm of our galaxy with planet-like light fixtures that appear to float in mid-air. Washed in Xiong’s signature black-and-white gradient hues, Before the Eclipse also invites a meditative experience that emphasizes texture, material, and craft–key design traits that often take a backseat to color. Set in a dark, moody hotel room, with black carpeted floors and black-to-white gradient wallpaper from Calico Wallpaper’s Aurora Collection in the Eclipse colorway, Xiong’s new ceiling lamp and wall sconces are the centerpieces of the exhibition, and the room’s only light sources. The new Void Wall Sconces are two boxy cast resin lights with a metal globe inside to emulate the dark glow of an eclipse. The dark metal sphere is designed to look like it’s suspended in thin air–a design tactic Xiong often uses to make a complicated design technique appear simple. Showcased in brushed aluminum and golden black metal, the fixtures play with the contrast of darkness and light, manipulating what gets to be illuminated and what is concealed.
